B.A. Peer Counselling

Course Requirements (128 credit hours)

In this major you will learn the interpersonal and communication skills needed for counselling peers in the personal, work, family and spiritual issues they face. If you are interested in becoming a licensed counsellor, this degree is an advantageous program for you to take before entering a Masters program in Counselling.

Program Objectives:

In addition to the Program Objectives of the BA degree, the following objectives apply to students choosing the Counselling Major:

  • Demonstrate the ability to deal with strong emotions in a counselling situation.
  • Develop the ability to maintain personal convictions without imposing them on counselees.
  • Demonstrate good listening, questioning and interviewing skills.
  • Show a basic knowledge of common issues (such as depression, addictions, shame, self-harm).
  • Have the ability to distinguish between the presenting problems and the primary problem(s) of a counselee.
  • Have the ability to engage in, and lead others in, clinical theological reflection.
  • Understand the cultural, gender and spiritual issues affecting the counselling dynamic.
